Hotel Dunav is situated on a beautiful location in the shade of centuries-old plane trees and will undoubtedly charm every guest at first glance. It is a small family hotel with 15 accommodation units and a restaurant with 180 seats, which, during warm weather, extends to its exterior, that is, several large gazebos on an embankment, overlooking the beautiful and mighty Danube. One of the gazebos is turned into a lounge and cocktail bar on the riverfront, where you can refresh yourself during hot days. With a parking lot, huge children’s playground and tennis courts, it is an ideal place for family outings, as well as romantic lunches and dinners. Despite the busy hours and the fact that we did not make a reservation, the waiters welcomed and seated us very warmly. The cuisine is continental, typical of the Danube region and mainly based on freshwater fish (zander, carp and catfish) prepared in various ways, but there are also various grilled meats. The wines are local, from the famous Ilok area, and the hosts will gladly arrange wine tastings in the small wineries, or a boat ride on the Danube. You should definitely order fish dishes, as we did. Our choice was the famous zander. In addition to the rolls of zander wrapped in prosciutto for our appetiser, we also tasted an excellent fish pate on a toast, which was more than enough to help us through the sweet expectation of the main course, grilled zander and fillets in corn flour, served with celeriac puree and crispy baked potatoes. Portions are, as usual, large enough to share, and the fish is fresh, tasty and well-seasoned. The selection of deserts is not big, so we chose the traditional variation, pancakes with walnuts in wine chateau, which – though very simple – perfectly rounded our lunch experience. The dishes are affordable, the location exceptionally beautiful, and the food fresh, and we wholeheartedly recommend visiting this fabulous oasis where the Danube kisses the sky.
