Situated in the heart of the old city center, Carol is a landmark of Brăila’s glorious past. Beautiful stained glass, wood work, terracotta stoves, ceramics, all restored or carefully rebuilt, almost as in a museum. The menu is also complex and quite a read, which might keep you from making a decision. Yet there are many appealing names, so just go for whatever catches your attention. The duck breast with figs, and particularly the octopus with crushed potatoes and roasted red pepper sauce were good hits. And the homemade profiterole will surely remind you of those golden days when big brand ice creams were not an option. For a less opulent decor, ask to visit the cellar – it used to be a bank vault.
